Here are five of our favourites:
- Beamish Park and Causey Arch circular:
Literally on the doorstep of our dog friendly hotel crossing open countryside to reach the beautiful gorge with Causey Burn flowing at its base.
Here you will have chance to explore some of Britain's most important industrial heritage, visiting Causey Arch, the oldest surviving single arch railway bridge. Free Parking and picnic area. Find out more here.
- Hedley Hall Wood
Just a short walk from our dog-friendly hotel. Discover this 2.9-km loop trail near Newcastle upon Tyne.
Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 43 min to complete. This trail is great for hiking and walking, and it's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring.
A peaceful walk following the Blue trail through Hedley Hall Wood, exploring the lovely woodland and grass fields in the area.
This is a beautiful, short trail that is also great to do with the dog. Some sections along this trail can get pretty muddy after rainfall, so come prepared with the appropriate footwear Find out more here.
- Beamish Woods circular walk
Start at Eden Place Picnic Area Car Park just off the A693 near the entrance to Beamish Museum.
These pretty woods in the village of Beamish have some nice woodland trails to try. There's also some waterside paths along the River Team and bluebells in springtime.
This circular walk runs for about 2 miles taking you through Ousbrough Woods to Ousbrough Hill. About a mile north west of the site there's another nice woodland walk in the grounds of Beamish Hall. The 18th-century country house includes 24 acres of grounds with themed family trails at certain times of the year.
Also nearby is the excellent Beamish Museum. The open-air museum is a fascinating place for a stroll with original and replica buildings, a large collection of artifacts, working vehicles and equipment, as well as livestock and costumed interpreters.
The Consett and Sunderland Railway Path runs past the woods so you could pick this up to continue your walking in the area. Find out more here.
- Watergate Park
Watergate Forest Park is located on the site of the former Watergate Colliery on the outskirts of Gateshead. Following reclamation work in the 1990s the site has been transformed and now provides a haven for wildlife and a great recreational site for visitors.
The park has many features to look out for including wildlife, flowers, sculptures, streams and waterfalls. A series of trails and paths takes you through woodland, around the lake and wildflower meadows. The park is suitable for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.
The route around the lake is flat but there are steep paths to the top and also steps into and in the forest that may be unsuitable for wheelchair and pushchair users. Find out more here.
- Derwent Walk
The Derwent Walk is popular 12-mile linear route between Consett and Swalwell, offering fabulous views across the Derwent Valley. The route passes through woodland and runs past picturesque ponds and relaxing riverside areas.
There are fragments of ancient woodland which are home to many birds including green and great spotted woodpecker, nuthatch and sparrowhawk.
You will pass through the steelworks site at Consett which is alive with the sound of skylarks. Keep an eye out too for fox, roe deer and badger tracks, and along the riverside kingfisher, heron and dipper can be seen. Find out more here.
